There are many distinctive patterns and designs that make Italian dinnerware pottery some of the most vibrant and unique pieces in the world. Many of these motifs date back centuries and are still practiced by traditional artisans, preserving a hallmark of Italian culture for future generations. Among these design traditions are the Arabesco, Dolfi, Raffaellesco, and the Galleto.

The Arabesco design is derived from the Persian influence on Italy during the 17th Century. Marked by ornate geometric designs and depictions of plant life, leaves and ribbons, Arabesco pottery and dinnerware is primarily found in pieces from the Deruta region in central Italy. Many Italian plates and Italian tableware, including wine coasters and olive oil pours, are made in this fashion today and feature brightly colored birds added to the ornamentation, evoking harmony and peace throughout the home.

Reminiscent of one of Italian Master Raphael's timeless frescoes, the dragon motif of the Raffaellesco design is meant to bring good luck. In Italian lore, the dragon is a harbinger of safe passage for ancient sea merchants. The puff of wind from its mouth promotes ideal sailing conditions, and thus successful voyages. The Raffellesco has been a classic recurring motif in Italian majolica since the Renaissance. Italian dinnerware pottery, such as butter dishes, salt and pepper sets, and cheese dishes decorated in this fashion has been a staple of Italian plates for centuries.

The Galleto, or rooster, is also very influential in Italian folklore and can be found in many pieces of Italian pottery. Common in Italian dinnerware as well as fruit jars, teapots, and other functional pieces of pottery, the rooster is the traditional spirit-animal safeguard against trespassers. As a housewarming gift, a rooster motif is said to instill a sense of safety, as the rooster is seen as a vigilant protector. A fixture of pottery and tableware from Deruta, the Galleto is often beautifully plumed and adorned with garlands.

In the northern region of Tuscany, the Dolfi family has been crafting unique pottery for generations. These pieces are each hand-painted and bridge classic Italian designs with a contemporary touch. The Dolfi designs create Italian tableware and Italian pottery that is as functional as it is beautiful and as gracious as wall-hanging art as it is serving a delicious meal. Encompassing all of Italy's artistic traditions in design and sculpture, the Dolfi family craft incredibly diverse collections of Italian tableware and is sure to be prized in any collection.

Italian dinnerware pottery is as exquisitely decorated as they are practical. These design traditions are just a few of the radiant colors in the prismatic spectrum of Italian pottery.
